Detained

Using faces cropped from online news and publicity shots, Detained conflates the function of images in public circulation—where photographic arrest confers celebrity or at least notoriety—with the role images play in the surveillance and control apparatus of the national security state.  The work plays off the multiple implications of photography’s power to detain, which since its inception have made it a tool of memory and celebrity but also of deterrence and repression.
